How Do Brakes Work?

Most vehicles today are equipped with hydraulic brakes that are carefully designed and engineered. When working at a full performance level, the parts in this braking system work together to bring your vehicle to a safe and complete stop. The balance of moving parts must be maintained and regularly serviced in order to ensure proper functioning.

Until the 1950s, most automobiles employed a cables and pulleys system that engaged the brakes when pulled. However, these systems were unreliable and prone to snapping when weakened or pulled too hard. Hydraulic brakes are much more reliable and come in two varieties: disc and drum.

From the moment you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure is forced out of the master cylinder and through a series of steel brake lines. When it reaches each tire, the pressure causes the brakes to engage. This will be discussed more later.

Since the development of hydraulic brakes, drivers are more confident behind the wheel. However, don’t let your guard down when it comes to brake inspections and maintenance.

Brakes rarely fail out of the blue, but rather as a result of the snowballing of many minor issues. If you notice any of the following warning signs, bring your vehicle to your local Ford service department right away! Look out for:

  • Bumpy braking,
  • Vehicle pulling to one side,
  • Soft brake pedal,
  • Grinding or squealing noise,
  • Overheating.

Disc Brakes

The most common type of braking system uses disc brakes. After you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure is released into several brake lines, traveling to each wheel. The pressure ends up at the caliper brake assembly and pushes both brake pads (one on either side of the rotor) toward the rotor.

As a result, the brakes are engaged, and the car is able to stop. The clamping force of the brake pads against the rotor converts kinetic energy (gathered by the tires during movement of the car) into thermal energy (heat).

At times, your brakes will heat up to 950 degrees! Luckily, your rotors and pads can withstand this type of heat. Nevertheless, brake inspections are still a necessity as the parts wear down over time. This heat can also be referred to as friction caused by the pads and rotors.

Calipers, Rotors, and Pads

The brake caliper holds several parts together in a single assembly. It is made up of pistons, brake pads, rubber seals, dust boots, anti-rattle clips, and bleeder screws. Each of these parts serves a purpose to the entire assembly.

Therefore, they must be inspected regularly. The caliper is mounted onto a bracket that sits alongside the rotors and presses on the brake pads as they clamp down on the rotor.

Rotors and brake pads provide the necessary friction which is needed to bring your car to a stop. After the caliper is engaged and the pads clamp on the rotor, the car should stop. Over time, the force exerted on these parts will cause them to wear down significantly.

For example, brand new rotors will have tiny grooves on them that go in a circle around the part, much like the grooves on a vinyl record. When the grooves become worn down, the rotor will not provide as much friction against the brake pad. In fact, the pads will come close to losing their ability to grasp the rotor at all.

In a similar way, brake pads start out at a certain measurement and grow smaller over time. Like the tread on tires, they will begin to lose the gripping ability they were made for.

Drum Brakes

Although drum brakes are considered relatively outdated, they are still used on the back axle of vehicles. This lowers the overall cost of manufacture, and the cost of repair is lower as well. The placement of drum brakes has to do with weight distribution; disc brakes are able to handle more weight and are therefore often on the front.

A drum brake assembly is made up of three primary parts: wheel cylinder, pistons, and shoes. The cylinder is hollow and contains the pistons and shoes.

When the brakes engage, the pistons push the shoes outward against the cylinder. This is similar to the way the caliper pushes the pads against the rotor, bringing the vehicle to a stop.
