Why is my battery dead?

A dead battery is the most common cause of a vehicle not starting. However, there are many ways a battery can die. Below, you can see a list of reasons why your battery may not be working.

  • Excessive corrosion on the battery’s connections
  • Loose battery connections
  • Drained of power by headlights, trunk light, etc.
  • Alternator not working properly
  • Old age or poor condition

Car batteries often die from being drained of energy. This occurs when the headlights, trunk light, or other electrical component is left on after the vehicle is shut off. The battery is slowly drained of energy from the power source. Then, when you go to start your car, it doesn’t turn on. Instead, you’ll hear a clicking sound that. That sound is the starter, an energized motor, not having enough juice to start the car.

Jump-starting a car battery

Jump-starting a car battery can be done in eight simple steps.

Jump-Starting a Dead Battery

Fortunately, there is an easy fix for a battery that has been drained of power. You need a set of jumper cables and another working vehicle to perform the following steps.

  1. Find a pair of jumper cables and a working vehicle.
  2. Make sure both vehicles are in park, and their engines are off.
  3. Attach one red clip (positive) to the positive terminal (larger of the two) on the dead vehicle’s battery.
  4. Then, attach the other red clip to the positive terminal on the working vehicle.
  5. Place the black clip (negative) to the working vehicle’s negative terminal.
  6. The other black clip attaches to a piece of metal that is unpainted and away from the battery of the dead vehicle.
  7. Once the clips are attached, start the working vehicle and let it run for about 5 minutes.
  8. Finally, start the dead vehicle and drive it around for 15 minutes. This is to ensure the battery holds a charge when turned off again.

What if jump-starting doesn’t work?

If jump-starting your vehicle does not work, then it is most likely one of two causes: (1) the battery is too old or in poor condition to hold a charge or (2) the battery is not being charged properly by the alternator.

Batteries typically last between three and five years. Unfortunately,  modern cars have so many more electrical components that three years is a more accurate estimate. So, your battery may be in poor condition or too old to hold a charge. If you are unsure how old your battery is, you can look at the battery date code.

Reading a Battery Date Code

For Ford batteries, it appears on the battery case as two characters. These two characters are a letter and a number. The letter indicates the month. A stands for January, B stands for February, C stands for March, and so on. The second character, the number, indicates the last digit of the year the battery was made.

Was your battery made more than five years ago? If so, contact a Ford dealership in order to receive a replacement. On the other hand, your battery could be dead due to the alternator. This problem is more difficult to identify because it may not be as obvious. Plus, your alternator may not show any signs of problems.

Alternator Problems

There are a couple of signs you can look for when trying to determine if the alternator is going bad. Firstly, watch your interior lights like your dashboard lights as you drive. Are they slowly losing their brightness? Secondly, watch your headlights as you accelerate. Do they brighten when you push down on the accelerator? Do they dim when you left off the accelerator?

Saying yes to any of the aforementioned questions is a sign of needing your alternator inspected. A factory-trained technician will inspect your electrical system and alternator. From there, they will inform you of potential problems before moving forward with repairs.
